Memorial Day 18

My parents have been here this past week and I have a unique opportunity. My Daddy served over 20 years in the Navy. He did two world tours and we honor and love him for his service. We put together a book of pics and history of his time in the Navy. Some of it we pulled from his own history but much of it came from my mother. We printed several books so that my parents, each of us children and each of their grandchildren have a copy. Tonight after the BBQ we presented this Gift to my Father and Mother. Since I was the only one of their children present I got to speak. It was special this year for everyone to celebrate his service. We often offer gratitude and attend a community function but it definitely has a greater impact when you celebrate with one that wore the uniform. I have rarely seen my Father shed a tear but it was a precious moment for him. He did say he appreciated the recognition and the work we put into the books. Often so many years have passed he feels quite removed from his time in the Navy. Memorial Day and July 4th though bring a clarity of memory that time can never erase. He loves our country and is a true Patriot. In all the years since I left home this was the only Memorial Day I have enjoyed with my parents. It was a moment.

I am grateful for his service and example.
