I have three brackets this year. The family bracket, friend bracket and young women bracket. Monday night we had friends over for the Bracket Party. Keith was King of the Grill and barbecued hamburgers & hotdogs. Everyone set up their brackets even some not planning to. Peer pressure and prizes tend to be powerful motivations. The overall winner gets an Xbox One with some games and all those that pick the NIT winner get a set of movie tickets. It’s going to be a fun group, we have over 100 playing.
The young women came over on Tuesday evening for our activity of eating pizza and filling out brackets for March Madness. The Bishopric came as our Tournament Experts to help the girls as most of them had never done a bracket. It was so much fun and I love having them try new things. We did up March Madness tees for the girls with “playing to win” on them. It was a party, It took time, Bishopric was very patient lol.
As for the family bracket. I won last year and oh my heck the smack talk is insane. It’s like psychological warfare with the men in this family. I really want to win and get my name on the family plaque again. So I’m ignoring it and we will see what happens!
Tonight I’m in Park City. Had dinner at Ruth Chris with clients and tomorrow is their event. They have prizes for the March Madness Tournament as well and almost everyone is playing. We will be posting score updates and rankings of the participants during the event. After 8 pm both nights we will have the game on as well with giveaways for those attending.
Just winding down tonight after half an hour in the hot tub out watching the snow fall. Beautiful and surprisingly warm night. This week has been awesome!
I am so excited. This is like the most awesome of awesome weekends in 2017.
So here goes. Friday morning we are headed to Utah early. We will be staying at my favorite place in Sundance this trip. We can ski in and out of the property and this will be our first stay we get to do that. Makes for a fun day and plenty of hot chocolate breaks lol. Friday night is our annual Christmas Movie with clients and friends. This year the movie is The Last Jedi. I can’t wait to see everyone and to see the Saga continue. I have been telling everyone there is some huge reveal in the movie. It is going to be EPIC!
Saturday we are having an early dinner at Tucanos then the BYU Utah basketball game. Rise and Shout Cougars! Beat the Pukes! Going to enjoy my 4 inches of Cougar Tail and milk at the game and we are going to make some noise! Sunday we will go to our old Ward. Will be nice to see everyone else. I can’t believe 2018 brings two years since we moved. Happiest of days reunited with friends.
Monday we will be skiing as I mentioned. Glad they have enough snow to finally open. Monday night we attend the Forgotten Carol concert at UVU. This is one of our favorite things to do. This is the 11th time but first in a couple of years. It will be a fun evening with friends and family. If you are unfamiliar with Michael McLean’s Forgotten Carols make the time to go see it. If you can’t buy the CD and Book. Uncle John will bring such Joy into your life. Here is a link to The Forgotten Carols.
The other thing I love about this concert is at the end everyone sings Together Forever. It is so powerful and such a way to set the stage for Christmas. Here is the video.
Tuesday we will sleep in, have a big breakfast and then head home. I can’t believe the stars lined up this way for “The Greatest Weekend of the Year.” But they did. Now if BYU wins it will be perfect. Go Cougars!
I won the March Madness Family Challenge for the 9th time in 15 years. Honestly I didn’t think I would this year. Oregon almost did me in. Taking out Michigan who I had winning then Kansas who I had winning. I dropped to fourth place but North Carolina stayed alive and made up 480 points in the end. Another exciting year of Madness 🏀
Well we made the trek south to see BYU came Gonzaga. Gonzaga right now is the numbet 1 ranked team in the country you know! So it was not just the rivalry game, it was an undefeated huge game with potential for an upset on Groundhog Day. Plus it was packed. We barely got a parking place and we were early!
So here is how the trip and everything went down. We left on Wednesday late afternoon. Had Thursday to get some things done. A friend came by and taught my mother in law and I some cool dōTERRA stuff. We made some blends and on a very personal note we are grateful for her love and encouragement. Keith spent the day with his parents. I went and had lunch with Sara. We hit Tucanos and had a big lunch. They made sure we got plenty grilled pineapple. After lunch we stopped at Mr Mac and ordered some more shirts, ties and another set of pants for my missionary. Love that Mr. Mac ships for me. We then went to Deseret Book and got some new garments for Keith and I. I needed to get back so gave Sara a hug and off I went. Keith offered to take his parents to dinner and they wanted Chuck-a-Rama. I was so full from Tucanos I didn’t have much, just a salad and some jello. Keith was crazy hungry, so they all ate up. We got to the game early and Sara and I met up and went to find peeps. She is quite the social butterfly. We were back and forth all over the place. Was fun to see friends and even got down on the floor at one point before the game. I had 4 inches of Cougar Tail and some Kettle Corn. I was feeling a sugar high like crazy. Keith bought like 4 Cougar Tails and was sharing them with all the kids around us. I think he was Mr. Popular last night. Keith’s parents left when the game was over and we stayed for awhile chatting with friends then a few of us were hungry so decided on IHOP. I needed some real food again so ordered eggs, toast and sausage with sides of bacon and ham. This round Keith wasn’t hungry so he just had hot chocolate. He and Todd kept stealing my bacon. I ended up having to order like 3 sides of bacon. Very bad boys. We finally got home at a little after 2 am. We had one final stop this morning after sleeping in. I wanted Lehi Rollermills muffin and cookie mixes. I told Keith I was going to get a bunch and not to complain after all the Girl Scout cookies he bought. It was just like nope, don’t say a word. He just quietly signed the receipt and I am happy again.
The game was so fun. Sara and I tried to get on TV, we danced, we played the air drums, we even held up this ladies cute baby. Nothing worked that I am aware of. The Marriott Center was loud, like insanely loud. The Roc section was all the way to the top. Most I have ever seen. BYU got to within 6 with about 2 minutes left. They just couldn’t close the gap. The Cougarettes gave us their National Title performance of their Hip Hop routine. Was awesome as always. I had so much fun!
In particular BYU and Utah fans, although it is pretty universal across all fans of all teams. Maybe my perspective is unique because of a decade of cheerleading. Maybe not. I love BYU. I think most people that follow my blog or know me appreciate my passion for the Blue. I will start with BYU. Our fans have three very bad habits. 1. Unrealistic expectations. Surprise! Even before the days of Independence this flaw existed. It keeps so many fans from enjoying the game. Season after season is soured for them because of those losses that we should have won. Solution is simply keep it real. 2. Believing that our losses somehow were our own doing. The mentality that we beat ourselves is flawed. Reality is more like they beat us. A game is filled with mistakes, great plays, penalties and luck. We don’t beat ourselves the other team has every thing to do with it. Solution accept defeat graciously. 3. Quit complaining about Independence. We have had the opportunity of playing some incredible programs and many great teams have come to Provo that never would have. When the time is right we will join a Conference but Independence has been good for BYU. Solution accept your not the AD and enjoy the journey. Now for the school up north. Here are the Ute fan flaws. 1. When you lose own it don’t start talking about BYU. It is okay to say we sucked against Oregon. I only bring this up because it was the most recent example of deflection to BYU. I get it your embarrassed but it’s ok. You did not play BYU Saturday and look stupid bringing it up. 2. Stop talking about BYU. Only one week a year should be focused on BYU that is game week. I have never seen a fan base with more BYU envy than Utah. They don’t even have a rival in the PAC12 yet because they are so focused on BYU. In my personal opinion they will never achieve their Mountain West greatness again until they move on. 3. Letting College Game Day eff up great seasons. Don’t lose your heads Ute fans. It curses you like every time. Solution for Ute fans is simple. Become a BYU Cougar fan. To all the fans of both schools I will predict BYU will own Utah in the next football game. 💙
To illustrate this rivalry I have a little tale. Three friends were hiking in the Wasatch Mountains. One a BYU Cougar fan, one a Utah State Aggie fan and one a Utah Ute fan. They came across a magic lamp. They brushed it off and a great and powerful Genie appeared. He offered them each one wish for freeing him. The Aggie fan wished that Cache Valley would remain pristine and beautiful forever. The Genie granted his wish. The Cougar fan asked that the Wicked be driven out of the city and land of Provo. The Genie granted his wish as well and great walls appeared around the city and land of Provo as the wicked fled. The Utah fan asked the Genie how big the walls were. The Genie somewhat proud of his work said 50 feet tall and fifty feet wide. The Utah fan said to the Genie fill it with water. Moral of the story is this. No one cares about Utah State only the cheese. BYU fans have had their greatness and want that tradition to continue. Finally Ute fans can’t leave BYU alone no matter what. Despite busting the BCS twice as a Mountain West team when talking to Ute fans they cite 6 straight wins againsy BYU as the pinnacle of their greatest achievement. How sad and no wonder they are a mid tier PAC12 team. I don’t hate Utah football. I can’t stand the basketball coach but that is another story. Kyle Whittingham is a great coach and I often find myself cheering for him and the boys in Red. I hope this new attitude makes the rivalry better and really Yewt fans brag about something far greater than a win over BYU. A little secret I’ll share. We expect Utah to beat us more often than not. Your from the mighty PAC12 after all. Utah fans you have two BCS bowls. One more and you may equal the greatness of a 1984 Championship 😇.
